Unbeaten Sho Nogami (6-0, 3 KOs; amateur 40-23), 112, managed to dethrone Japanese flyweight ruler Josuke Nagata (8-3, no KO), 112, by an upset majority decision (96-92, 98-92, 95-95) over ten hard-fought all-southpaw rounds on Tuesday in Tokyo, Japan. Nogami made a good start and piled up points in the first half—48-47, 49-46, 50-45 all in his favor after the fifth. The slow starter Nagata seemingly swept all rounds in the second half, but his aggressiveness wasn’t thoroughly evaluated by all the judges. This reporter saw it 95-95 to support Nagata’s breathlessly succcessful defense of his national title, but his belt was gone. Nagata may deserve a rematch to regain his belt.
