The dam had sustained cracks and was at risk of failure after the area received heavy rainfall from Helene. The Nolichucky River was 17 feet above the water levels measured before the storm, according to the United States Geological Survey.At least 50 people are dead in five states after the storm made landfall near Perry, Florida, as a Category 4 hurricane Thursday night. Many died when trees fell on their homes. Others died in severe weather.
