Vettel leads list of biggest-fined drivers in 2022

0 6

Aston Martin's Sebastian Vettel has notched up the biggest amount of fines so far in 2022, mainly thanks to his outspoken behaviour at the driver's briefing for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Vettel ended up walking out of the meeting and was handed a €25,000 fine by the race stewards.

Vettel was also fined a further €5,000 for driving a scooter on track without permission after crashing in practice for the Australian Grand Prix and bringing out the red flags.

Together with sundry speeding fines, Vettel has been fined a total of €35,900 over the first 13 races of the season, well ahead of Ferrari's Carlos Sainz who is the next most-fined driver of the season having been docked €25,000.

Sergio Perez was the third most-fined driver of the year on €10,600, ahead of five drivers - Lewis Hamilton, Daniel Ricciardo, Zhou Guanyu, Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen - who are all paying out €10,000.

Hamilton, Verstappen and Leclerc were fined when their drivers assistants and physios were deemed to have entered parc ferme “without permission and in violation of the procedure that was published prior to the race for the orderly conduct of the event” at the Austrian Grand Prix.

The figures have been compiled by licensed online casino site Casumo, from data supplied by the FIA.

Largest amount of fines incurred in 2022 to date

Pos Driver Team Fines
1 Sebastian Vettel Aston Martin €35,900
Carlos Sainz Ferrari €25,000
2 Sergio Perez Red Bull €10,600
3 Lewis Hamilton Mercedes €10,000
Daniel Ricciardo McLaren €10,000
Zhou Guanyu Alfa Romeo €10,000
Charles Leclerc Ferrari €10,000
Max Verstappen Red Bull €10,000
5 Lance Stroll Aston Martin €5,900
6 Valtteri Bottas Alfa Romeo €2,000
7 Alex Albon Williams €1,800
8 Yuki Tsunoda AlphaTauri €1,300
Pierre Gasly AlphaTauri €1,300

But when it comes to the number of individual offences for which a driver has received a warning, reprimand or penalties it's a very different picture.

From this point of view the sport's bad boys are AlphaTauri's Yuki Tsunoda and Williams' Alex Albon, both of whom have been told off by the race stewards eight times in the 13 races to date before the summer break.

Tsunoda's infractions included pit lane speeding in Canada, driving unnecessarily slowly in the Australian qualifying, and for numerous stories of impeding and collisions. Albon’s have included gaining an advantage by leaving the track for unjustifiable reasons, and pit lane speeding.

Alfa Romeo driver Zhou Guanyu has been told off on seven occasions, the same number as Vettel. And three drivers have committed six offences in the eyes of the officials, with Pierre Gasly, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll all in hot water half a dozen times.

Three drivers have only been in the bad books once - Hamilton, Verstappen and Mick Schumacher. They clearly haven't been trying hard enough!
