Men’s Captain’s Weekly News 13th May 2025
Hola a todos.
At the time of writing, it would appear that the weather gods have at last decided to allow Summer to make an appearance having teased us along for the past while.
On Friday 2nd, we had a very enjoyable ACL match at Santa Maria GC where we lost narrowly 10 v 8 – not a bad result given that we had no chance to warm up because of a 9am start time. Last Friday, we “looked after business” (please excuse the American golf parlance) in the return leg at the SRC when we routed SMGC 15.5 v 2.5 proving that in this competition, home advantage is crucial. Well done team.
The rest of the weekend was all about the Ladies. A determined 28 sallied forth on Saturday morning under sunny skies for the first of two rounds of medal play off the tips in their annual Club Championship. The rigours of this form of the game were in full view and proved too complicated for some but, eventually, on Sunday afternoon, worthy winners of the gross and nett prizes emerged in the form of Leni Van Berlo and Janine Dols respectively. Congrats to both.
Following dinner and prizegiving, the ladies partied long and hard as only they can!
Many thanks to Frank Breuer, Bill Casey, Joachim Friedl, Jon Hale, Jim Jenet, Steven Lamb and Derek Rogers who made sure that all went smoothly for our beloveds.
Roll Ups were held on Tuesday and Thursday last week and the results are set out below:-
TUESDAY
Winner – DAVID WAITE (41 points)
Second – PAUL CAMBRIDGE (38)
Third – TERRY YOUNG (37)
Fourth – JIM JENET (36).
David Waite, fresh in from Dubai where he’s a member of The Emirates GC, had resurrected an old putter/wand/weapon of mass destruction and with it had a mere 22 putts in his round which also included a run of consecutive birdies at the 14th, 15th and 16th. His 41 points represented a gross 71 (a joy to watch!)
NP Paul Cambridge
2s David Waite, Daniel Bristol, Paul Cambridge.
THURSDAY
Winner – DEREK ROGERS (42 points)
Second – DAVID STEELE (40)
Third – DAVID MACGREGOR (39)
Fourth – SIMON SUTCLIFFE (38).
Notably, Ross Easton, who has occasionally contended for the tissue, had two 5 pointers on his back 9 – one sure way of smartening up a scorecard!
Things are looking up Ross!
SATURDAY:
Last Saturday, we had the monthly Ranking again kindly sponsored by Abbeygate Insurances and it happily coincided with Mandy Stanford’s birthday which was celebrated on the terrace (¡and no, I don’t have a number!).
The results are:-
Winner – PAUL WEIGALL
Second – JOACHIM FRIEDL
Third – PETE YEOMAN
Perhaps not so notably, during my round I witnessed one of the finest whiffs with a fairway wood I’ve ever seen. Naturally, I’m not going to reveal the name of the player involved; ¡suffice to say that the effort could only be described as “bovine”!
As I’m sure you all know, the course is closed for a week from Monday 12 May to Sunday 18 May for annual maintenance works and will reopen on Monday May 19th.
However, I have to ask for your forbearance as it will take at least a week – a fortnight (?) – for the course to recover and so winter rules will apply during that time.
We’ll have the usual Roll Ups next Tuesday and Thursday, but on The San Roque Resort Club (formerly the New Course) and they’ll be non federated.
All the best and keep it down the middle.
M. KEANE
