Men’s Captain’s Weekly News 7th April 2025

Gentlemen

Slowly but surely normal weather conditions are returning to San Roque. Just as well with a busy week of golf for some with SIX competitions on SIX consecutive days. The headline must start with the last day of the week and the Seve Trophy.

SEVE Trophy Sunday April 6th

For those not fully aware, this is an annual match where the current and past Captains play against the top 6 Ladies and Men in the Annual Ranking Tournament. The game is Pairs MatchPlay over 27 holes (three nines) and a point is won for each nine and one for the overall. The Captains have had a tough time over the past years, last winning the Trophy in 2017 and retaining the trophy in 2018 with a halved match. Since 2018 the Ranking team have had unrivalled success. I am super happy to report that this year it all changed. The Captains team were successful by 15 points to 9, with some outstanding performances. I biased, mention one pair in the last group out. Unfortunately, Michael Keane had to retire after nine holes feeling unwell (he has recovered), which left Svetlana Friedl to play against the very in-form team of Frank Breuer and Radik Yamilov. Svetlana cruised to a resounding win 31⁄2 – 1⁄2 which will go down in the history of the Seve Trophy. Some might say I am biased, and I agree! Very well played Captains team but I have a feeling the Ranking team could be out for some revenge next year.

MEN’S Competition Tuesday April 1st

A vital piece of information was not attached to the cards for the day and caused quite a lot of confusion for those participating on April Fools Day. Consequently, it was a little difficult to determine the minor places other than the winner.

Results

1 st – Patrick O’Sullivan – 40 pts
2 nd – Jon Barber- 34 pts
3 rd – Paul Ingebrigtsen – 33 pts
Nearest the Pin – Jorg Kuhnert
2’s – David Macgregor
Tissue – Russ Williams

MEN’S Competition Thursday April 3rd

A small field of 19 players took to the course but scoring was amazing. Only three players didn’t reach 31 points or more. To show how competitive the day was, 35 points would only achieve you 13th place. It was definitely a Simon day. Simon Fothergill managed 41 points (gross 73 & 3 two’s) but lost out by 5 points to the winner Simon Sutcliffe with a super score of 46 points. This I think is likely to be his best score at San Roque!

Results

1 st – Simon Sutcliffe – 46 pts
2 nd – Simon Fothergill – 41 pts
3 rd – Chris Hutchin – 39 pts
4 th – Keith Harmer – 39 pts on Hcp
Nearest the Pin – David Macgregor
2’s – Simon Sutcliffe, Simon Fothergill x 3
Tissue – Tim Duerr

Monthly MEDAL Competition Saturday April 5th Sponsored by VINOMARKET

Many thanks as usual to Richard Bell-Young of Vinomarket for his continued sponsorship of the San Roque Monthly Medal. There were 34 members playing in the event and scoring by the top three were very good. Tony Maycock was third with a score of 3 under net only losing out on second place by handicap to Ian Jones. Both were pipped by the in-form Frank Breuer who was 4 under net. As you will have read earlier Frank would have been wishing for a similar score the following day in the Seve Trophy but alas the golfing gods had moved to the Captains – thank goodness!. A great round Frank and no doubt we will be seeing some similar scores in the years to come.

Results

1 st – Frank Breuer – 68
2 nd – Ian Jones – 69
3 rd – Tony Maycock – 69 on hcp
4 th – Andy Macauley – 72

Matches – Interclub Friendly West Hill Golf Club Wednesday April 2nd

There was an informal friendly match against West Hill Golf Club with four pairs from each club. As is largely the case home advantage counts for a lot. The match was played in great spirit and continued in the same way in the bar after a light lunch. We even made use of the Members terrace which is a sign that Spring is starting to make an appearance. The result of the match was a victory to San Roque 10 – 2 but the real success was the camaraderie between the two teams.

Trophy Match – Druids Glen Golf Club Friday April 4th

The traditional trophy match played against Druids Glen took place with 14 players in each team. It always seem strange playing against fellow members but with two members who are in both clubs, home advantage was slightly lower than normal. However, this did not stop the San Roque team putting in a stellar performance. Some close matches all seemed to go the way of SR. Perhaps
we were flattered – a little – by the final result of 181⁄2 -21⁄2. The return match will be in May in Ireland where I am certain Druids Glen will be looking for some revenge. The good news is that the Trophy, which is very heavy, will be kept at San Roque. The not so good news is that it will be carried back to Ireland in May and hopefully returned to San Roque by the winning team!! Well played team who enjoyed a few celebratory refreshments after the match

Tuesday – Flymow bunkers & Greens treatment with foliar fertilizer
