Men’s Captain’s Weekly News 31st March 2025
Gentlemen
Finally, this week we have returned to normal with the weather. We will now manage to complete most of the competitions that were postponed and eventually complete the Ranking tournament. Champion of Champions is fast approaching as well as the finals of the Match Plays.
MEN’S Competition Tuesday March 25th
With the sun returning so did the number of members playing in the Tuesday Men’s Competition. Perhaps time spent in the cabin watching videos on how to improve one’s golf has paid off for a few! Clearly, the ever-consistent Frank Breuer with an excellent 42 points (2 over gross) was far too good for the rest. He was 4 points clear of Andy Macauley who beat Paul Stevenson into second place on handicap. Many thanks to Michael Keane for looking after the competitions this week.

MEN’S Competition Thursday March 27th
A similar sized field compared to Tuesday with 28 members being greeted by the orange ball in the sky. In reality, it is actually white and only appears as orange due to the earth’s atmosphere. I digress. The course was proving difficult to beat with just two players playing better than their handicap. Andy Macauley was the winner on the day with 38 points, same score as Tuesday! He was closely followed by John Hunter on 37 points.

MIXED Flag Competition Saturday March 27th
A competition which is only played once per year brought out 45 members. It is a medal event where you place a marker at the point where your ball lands when you have run out of shots. This is calculated as 72 shots plus your playing handicap. Only two players, Andy Stanford and Ksenia Yamilova, managed to complete their round and went down the playoff hole to use their full quota of shots. Andy Stanford placing his flag nearer to the green than Ksenia and was the winner of the Flag event. John Hunter finished third just beating Amanda Stanford by being closer to the pin on the 18th hole.

Event, of the year long competition ended up extremely close with up to four players in with a chance of success. In this type of event, you can only control your own score and with the leaders grouped together in the final group no doubt they were all keeping an eye on their fellow competitors. After twelve events and taking the best six scores to count the eventual winner won by a single point. Iqbal Dharamsi finished on 92 points just one point ahead of Frank Breuer. Congratulations to Iqbal for a great year and commiserations to Frank, it was so close! Jim Jenet finished third just five points behind the winner.
First – Iqbal Dharamsi
