LADY CAPTAIN WEEKLY NEWS

LINDA FLETCHER - 15 May 2023

Hello Ladies
A beautiful week here in San Roque and back to some normality after last weekend’s club championships. It is great to see so many ladies here which makes varying the playing groups much easier and we all get a chance to play with different people.
The team at Caritas bought 400kg of potatoes to be distributed with the monies that we raised last year with Paul and TIna, which has been greatly appreciated by the local families that they support.
Also, we have managed to raise over 2,500 euro for the Gib special golf team who have been avidly practicing their putting this week in readiness for the special Olympics.
Thank you to all that have contributed to all our charitable fund raising.

11 of us played on Tuesday, and it is great to see Ulla Sallnas playing more regularly with us.

The results were:

1st: Linda Fletcher 39 pts (no birdies but 6 pars and 3 blobs!)
2nd: Helen Tallentire 36 pts
3rd: Rachel Wright 35 pts (Adios to Rachel for a while- hope it isn’t too wet in Glasgow)

On Thursday, 17 of us ventured out still feeling a bit jaded from the weekend and I think the scores reflected this. It was the World Series day so maybe some of you, not in San Roque, bettered our scores. Sorry cant find the photo!

The results were:

1st: Debbie Richards 35 pts
2nd: Anne Middlehurst 34 pts
3rd: Caroline Rogers 34 pts
Some of us have started the eclectic this week and I for one have got off to quite a good start with improvements having played consistently well. Both Diane Harmer and I had birdies on 12.
Many of us have started playing the match plays and I am out of the singles already. Well played Helen Tallentire, it was really enjoyable, very close and good luck in the next rounds.
A record 24 of us had a great round on Saturday in the May ranking sponsored by Amanda and Abbeygate Insurance. This is always a highlight of the month and keenly fought for our ranking points. 19 out of 24 were 30 or over and there were 9 players with birdies.

Results:

1st: Anne Middlehurst 42 pts (so consistent recently with another birdie on 7)
2nd: Diane Harmer 39 pts ( also with a birdie on 7)
3rd: Ksenia Yamilova 38 pts
4th: Ulla Sallnas 38 pts
5th: Yvonne Chu 36 pts (birdie on 4 which is amazing as this is such a tricky hole)
Because of the good scoring on the day, with the men having 10 scores over 36 with 2 men achieving 45 points, there was a -1 adjustment on the federation scores.

There have been some issues with logging into the website but hopefully these have been resolved and you can now retrieve and reset your password if you have forgotten it.
Please look at the gallery on the members area as there are some fantastic pictures of the club championships.

For those travelling back to their other homes and planning to be here for the captain’s weekend, the theme for the Saturday night is Black & White – so start planning your outfits (not black tie for men but smart casual). There have been a lot of communions here recently and the ladies do dress up for this occasion – saw a beautiful black and white outfit yesterday which gave me some inspiration! Need to keep on the diet though!

Looking Ahead for the rest of May...

Course Information from Ben:

•Greens and ante greens will be scarified in 2 direction with ante greens receiving an extra pass for the additional organic matter accumulation in these areas due to the differing construction specifications.
This will be followed by a large 16mm hollow tine. These works will see almost double the organic
removal that was achieved last year. target removal of 12.8% of the surface area. This period, and July’s closure and the works at the end of August are critical to start to bring these levels back under control.
We completed a LOI (loss of ignition) OM test recently and our surfaces in the top 20mm are between 4-5% on greens and the desired range is 1-2% for creeping bentgrass of the highest standard. Tees and ante greens are higher again. The aggressiveness of these works is critical and recovery timings will be 14-21 days so please keep this in mind.
•Tees will be more aggressive than greens and antes as these have higher OM levels again.
•Bermuda works will be split into fairways and rough this year with fairways receiving more OM removal works than roughs. Scarification hollow tining will be completed across all bermuda but at differing levels.
•The team will also be removing sand on some of the problematic bunkers, checking the drains, cleaning and adding new sand. Most notably, 4 green side, 16 green side and 17 fairway.
The weather forecast is looking a little questionable through Wednesday to Friday with potential rain, but the maintenance team will be working all hours to achieve the required works.
Please keep in mind last year’s closure was 14 days so the golf course will be sandier when it opens compared to last year.
