Arsenal pull off surprising move for gifted Premier League winger
Arsenal have completed the signing of winger Noni Madueke from Chelsea in a deal worth £48.5 million, making him the club’s fourth major acquisition of the summer.
Although his move had been in the works for several days, the Gunners confirmed the transfer following the successful completion of his medical and personal terms.
Madueke arrives at the Emirates Stadium on the back of a 92-game spell at Chelsea, during which he scored 20 goals and provided nine assists.
His most prolific campaign came last season, where he netted 11 times, including a memorable hat-trick against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Having recently returned from the Club World Cup — where he played five times for Chelsea but missed the final — Madueke will be given a short holiday and is expected to report for duty at Arsenal in early August. As such, he will not be involved in the club’s upcoming pre-season tour of Asia.
Speaking after the transfer was announced, Madueke described Arsenal as a “family club” and said he felt welcomed right away.
He also revealed that conversations with Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Jurrien Timber played a role in his decision to join.
Born in Barnet, Madueke started his youth career at Crystal Palace and later spent time at Tottenham Hotspur’s academy before moving to PSV Eindhoven.
He broke into the PSV first team as a teenager and scored 20 goals across 80 senior appearances before Chelsea brought him back to England in January 2023.
He now becomes the second Chelsea player to join Mikel Arteta’s side this summer, following the arrival of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. Arsenal have also secured midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard as part of a busy window.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta described Madueke as “one of the most gifted wide players in the Premier League” and praised his ability to influence matches in multiple roles.
Sporting Director Andrea Berta added that Madueke brings dynamism and depth to the squad as Arsenal prepare for a demanding season across all competitions.
The deal is subject to final regulatory approvals, but all key formalities have been completed.
