Sports Briefs: Marin Catholic volleyball looking to lock up top seed

Marin Catholic girls volleyball remained in first place following a 25-23, 25-7, 25-11 victory against San Rafael on Monday.

The Wildcats (21-4, 6-0 MCAL) play San Marin on Wednesday before a season-finale showdown against Branson at College of Marin on Friday.

The Bulldogs (22-5, 3-3) are one of four teams with three MCAL wins fighting for the last three playoff spots. Two of those teams face each other on Wednesday as Tam travels to face Terra Linda.

Boys water polo

Archie Williams High surged in the fourth period to a 15-11 victory over Novato on Monday to keep pace in the MCAL. The Peregrine Falcons (9-8, 4-2 league), currently in fourth place, are scheduled to close out the season against Marin Catholic and Marin Academy.

Jack Wren scored four goals for the Hornets (3-14, 1-6), who also got three goals from Owen VonBehren. Nolan Curtis scored twice for Novato, and Jackson Burt and Micah Traeger Hirschfelder each added one goal.

  • Trojans senior Cameron Hellar and junior Colby Ralls scored five goals each as Terra Linda held off San Marin, 14-10, on Monday night at Novato High. The third-place Trojans (11-6, 5-2 MCAL) got two goals and three assists from senior Harley Haveman and one each from Jackson Wright and Adam Albers. Hellar also had three assists and Ethan Minnich had four.
  • Redwood, rolling off its tournament championship over the weekend, earned a 19-7 victory over Marin Catholic on Tuesday to remain undefeated and alone in first place in the MCAL. The Giants (16-5, 7-0 MCAL) face a test against Terra Linda on Thursday. Marin Catholic (8-7, 4-3) looking for a playoff spot, closes out the season with Archie Williams and Terra Linda.

Girls water polo

Cate Eilerman tallied seven goals and six steals as San Marin beat Terra Linda, 18-6, on Monday in a matchup of two teams battling for playoff position.

Dani Jaime Coelho added five goals, two assists and two steals for the Mustangs (13-4, 3-4 MCAL), who also got three goals, four assists and two steals from Hazel Loskutoff. Lane Miguel chipped in with a goal, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots. The Mustangs and Trojans (3-8, 3-4) are fighting for the last two spots in the MCAL playoffs.

  • Redwood (13-5, 5-2) earned a crucial 9-3 victory over Marin Catholic on Tuesday to remain in the mix for one of the top four seeds in the MCAL playoffs.

Motor sports

Novato’s Amir Haleem and Kentfield’s Tim Lynn battled in the middle of the field during Sunday’s TransAm Western Championship race at Thunderhill Raceway Park. Haleem placed ninth, just ahead of Lynn in 10th in the CUBE 3 Architecture TA 2 Series race.
