AAU Boys’ National Championships 2025 – Final Recap
AAU Boys Nationals finally ended yesterday after an amazing 8 days of competition. 1427 teams across the country, Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands took part in this incredible event which has grown by leaps and bounds over the last 5 years.
AAU put on a great show, with an updated championship courts experience, new scoreboards, and some fancy medal award ceremonies.
First lets talk about the last day of of Wave 2 and then will dive deeper in some numbers and go through all the division winners, best teams, etc…
17 Open – Results
After 3 days of incredibly competitive and close games the Championship Division only had one 3-set match and that happened in quarterfinals between Triangle Boys 17 Black and C2 Attack who went on to win 2-1 (25-19, 19-25, 11-15). All of the other matchups were straight set affairs and never really seemed in doubt. Balboa Bay allowed more than 21 points only once and that was in semifinals against C2 who they defeated 25-17, 25-23. They defeated #1 seed in the tournament MVVC 2-0 (25-19, 25-20) in the final.
15 Open – Results
Unlike the 17s division, 15 Open Championship Division was full of twists and turns.
First MB Surf ASICS 15’s 1 beat Rockstar 15s 2-0 as their clean play carried them throughout the match. Rockstar made a lot of hitting, setting and service errors and it was just too much to overcome as they went down 25-21, 25-19.
In the matchup of big and physical teams, Bay to Bay vs. Coast, Bay to Bay squeaked out the first set 25-23 and then halfway through the second set their blocking really came alive and the game went from close 9-9 score to 14-9 in matter of minutes. After that Coast just could not stop the hitting of Bay to Bay enough to get back into the match and went down 25-17 in the second set.
Balboa Bay 15Blue was clinical in their QF matchup vs. SC Legends 15-Elite and they won 2-0 (25-14, 25-14).
The most exciting Quarterfinal featured the only two non-California Championship Division teams, MOD B15 Blue and Borinquen Coqui 15-1M. This was a great matchup that featured a lot of back and forth drama as the two teams battled point for point throughout the 3 sets. MOD struck first by winning 26-24 on a service ace and then Borinquen Answered by winning a 25-23 second set on a service error by MOD. MOD got the early lead in the 3rd set and never looked back bringing the game to a close with a 15-11 win and earning their place in top 4 teams in the country.
Both Semifinals went to 3 sets as MB Surf outlasted Bay to Bay 2-1 (25-23, 23-25, 15-13) and just made a couple of less mistakes. This was a nervy match on both sides and it was clear that both teams were feeling the pressure of the National Championship semifinal. In the other semifinal, Balboa Bay beat MOD 2-1 (24-26, 25-17, 15-8). This game was still very close midway through second set but then a number of uncharacteristic errors by MOD led to their downfall.
In the Final, MB Surf once again played amazingly and won a great and close match 2-0 (25-21, 26-24) vs. Balboa Bay and thereby winning the national title!
