'No one's done this before,' Texas beach volleyball in top 10 heading into final home tournament
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- In its first official season, the University of Texas beach volleyball team has already defeated some of the sport's powerhouses. That includes No. 5 Florida State University, No. 2 Loyola Marymount University and No. 9 University of California.
"I don't know how to explain it any better than it’s record-breaking and no one’s ever done this before," said Head Coach Stein Metzger, who comes to Texas from UCLA - the current No. 1 seed.
Texas enters the Lone Star Invitational with a 21-8 record, coming off a four-duel winning streak. Below is the team's schedule for Friday and Saturday. Games are played at the Wright-Whitaker Sports Complex and entry is free. You can also watch Friday's games live on CW Austin and Saturday's games live on KBVO.
- Friday: 12 p.m. vs. Southern Mississippi. 4:30 p.m. vs. No. 6 Cal Poly.
- Saturday: 12 p.m. vs No. 17 North Florida.
The conference tournament is on deck. Additionally, Metzger said the team is in a good position for a wildcard bid to the NCAA Championships in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
Senior weekend for Parmelly, Wickley
Saturday will be the last time Maddison Parmelly and Kylie Wickley will play on their home courts. They will be the first players to graduate from the program.
Wickley was the first person to commit as a beach recruit. Coach Metzger said she was his first phone call and she "committed on the spot." He went on to call Wickley a "great trailblazer" and "constant leader."
Parmelly, a grad student, was recently recognized with partner Karin Zolnercikova as the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association "pair of the week."
Metzger called Parmelly an "unnamed captain," and said she "created an incredible legacy in terms of culture" and is "critical" to the team's success.
