Stanford men’s volleyball wins in Hawaii for first time in 12 years
Snapping a 12-match losing streak dating back to 2013, No. 9 men’s volleyball handed No. 4 Hawaii its first loss of the season (9-1) on Saturday with a hard-fought four-set victory, 19-25, 26-24, 25-23, 26-24. The historic win marks Stanford’s first triumph over the Rainbow Warriors on their home court since 2013 and comes just two days after a grueling five-set loss to the same opponent on Feb. 5.
The Cardinal broke 22-all ties in the second and third sets, with Hawaii struggling to tie and ultimately failing to close out. In a decisive fourth set, unlike the .290 average they hit for their Feb. 5 matchup, Stanford brought a .600 average.
Junior offensive hitter Theo Snoey improved from his match high of 19 kills at the Feb. 5 matchup to deliver a career high of 23, while junior opposite hitter Moses Wagner hit another 14 kills along with another five digs, three blocks and an ace. Starting freshmen middle blockers Kaumana Carreira and Reed Wainwright hit a combined seven blocks and a total .579 without committing an attack error.
The Cardinal are now a perfect four-for-four and will play The Master’s University on Feb. 15 at home in Maples.
