Silver Lake volleyball coach notches 500th career win
SILVER LAKE (KSNT) - Silver Lake head volleyball coach Sarah Johnson made history in the Eagles' home opener Tuesday night.
Johnson notched her 500th career victory in a 2-0 win over Jefferson West. She's in her 17th season as Eagles' head coach, and has four 3A state title victories in her trophy case.
Silver Lake's gym was filled with Johnson's family members Tuesday night, all of which made the trip to share in her special moment from the stands.
"I saw some family members trickling in, and they did some traveling to be here to support me," Johnson said. "That means a lot. To have that family support, the community support."
Coach Johnson didn't want her personal achievement to take away from her team, but the players were beyond excited to celebrate her.
"[I] tried not to listen to them doing the chant," Johnson said while laughing. "Paige Hyman finished with a sweet kill in the middle, and I had one girl grabbing me and hugging me. It was so cool to know they're proud of me and we're doing this together."
Johnson said she was able to celebrate with her mother, who used to be her volleyball coach, after the game. The two both have hit the 500-win mark, and now have matching '500-win' volleyballs.
