Sports briefs: Redwood volleyball runs its record to 2-0

Madeleine Wagner had 17 kills and Katie Lazzareschi had 36 assists as the Redwood High girls volleyball team swept past Sacred Heart Cathedral, 25-14, 25-16, 25-20 on Thursday night. Ella Moran had 18 digs for the Giants (2-0) and Amelia Matthews hit .357 with seven kills.

  • Leah Mathewson had a huge game to lead Terra Linda to its fourth consecutive win, a five-set thriller against Maria Carrillo on Thursday. Mathewson had 40 assists, 18 digs, and five kills in the 25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 23-25, 15-10 victory. Kayli Chen added 14 kills for the Trojans (8-1) while Liza Reed had seven kills and 24 digs.
  • San Marin also pulled out a five-set win, outlasting Casa Grande 23-25, 25-12, 24-26, 25-6, 18-16 on Thursday. The Mustangs (3-1) had three players register double-digit kills in Brianna Nottingham (11), Paige Brumley (11), and Sylvia Tuerke (10). Tuerke added a team-high seven aces while Nottingham had five and Brumley had three. Sawyer Zappelli chipped in with six aces, five kills, and five blocks.
  • Abby Sims had 30 assists to help guide San Rafael to a 25-17, 25-9, 25-21 victory at Gateway on Thursday. Adurey Merk added eight kills and eight assists for the Bulldogs (6-3). Olivia Dugan had 10 digs. Cherise Castagne had seven kills and two blocks. Faith Pu’u had three kills and four blocks.
  • Novato (3-4) lost a close three-setter to Petaluma on Thursday, 24-26, 19-25, 25-27.
