Bay Area News Group girls high school athlete of the week: Marykate Cawicaan, Yerba Buena volleyball

Yerba Buena volleyball player Marykate Cawicaan is the Bay Area News Group’s girls athlete of the week for Oct. 4-10 after receiving 64.58% of the vote by the 5 p.m. deadline Wednesday.

Los Gatos water polo player Jackie King finished second and Menlo-Atherton golfer Katie Spivakovsky took third.

Congratulations to all the candidates for this week’s recognition.

Cawicaan, a 5-foot-6 middle hitter and team captain, led the Aztec Warriors to a 4-2 week. She had 55 assists, 49 kills, 39 digs and 18 aces to go along with eight blocks. Yerba Buena ended the week with a 14-6 overall record and a 4-1 mark in the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s Santa Teresa South Division.
