Star school athlete refuses to play on Sabbath

If necessary — and she hoped that it wouldn't become necessary — she was prepared to miss a playoff volleyball match if Cox Mill was to find itself at Watauga for the third round. If it came to that, the undefeated Chargers would have to try to advance without their top hitter and one of the state's best seniors.
But on Thursday night, as Cox Mill defeated Hickory in a second-round game, Watauga lost to West Henderson, giving Cox Mill a third-round home game on Saturday. That meant Cox Mill athletics director Phil Davanzo could select the game time, and time is of the essence when you're Raven Gray and it's the weekend.
