[Volleyball] Flames volleyball adds Semerad to squad

OMAHA, Neb. – Maria Semerad is excited to follow in the footsteps of both her mother and her sister and continue her education at College of Saint Mary.

The 5-6 defensive specialist recently signed her letter of intent to play volleyball and pursue a nursing degree at CSM. She is the daughter of Leroy and Virginia Semerad of Rogers, Neb.

"I wanted to go into the medical field and CSM is known for its great nursing program," Semerad said. "My sister Emily just graduated from the nursing program at CSM and my mom is also an alumnae of CSM in music education. They both had great experiences and memories from their time at CSM.

"I was hoping to be able to continue to compete and grow as a volleyball defensive specialist at the collegiate level and CSM is giving me that opportunity as well as a wonderful education in nursing. I also hope to be able to participate musically at CSM through vocal and cello performances."

Semerad has played volleyball all four years at Schuyler Central High School and also played basketball three years. She was named all-conference honorable mention three years and also earned academic all-conference honors.

She said her favorite sports hero is Kenzie Maloney and that outside of volleyball she also enjoys softball, singing, playing instruments (cello, tuba, baritone, piano), reading, playing with pets, watching movies and spending time with friends and family.

College of Saint Mary Volleyball Coach Rick Pruett is looking forward to having Semerad join the Flames.

"Maria is a great young lady who is a very hard worker on and off the court," Pruett said. "She played Libero for her high school team and led the team from a defensive standpoint.

"Maria has some long historic ties to CSM as her mom and sister both graduated from CSM. She will be a great addition to our program."
