[Men's Volleyball] No. 1 Grand View edges No. 8 Missouri Valley 3-2

Marshall, Missouri – The No. 1 Grand View Vikings defeated the No. 8 Missouri Valley Vikings 3-2 (23-25, 25-22, 25-18, 18-25, 16-14), Tuesday evening inside the Burns Athletic Complex. Grand View now moves to 5-1 on their season and 2-0 in the conference. 

The match between the Vikings went into a close five sets. The Missouri Valley Vikings took the first set 25-23, but then the Grand View Vikings turned it around to take set two 25-22 and set three 25-18. Missouri Valley fought back to win the fourth set 18-25 but it wasn't enough as Grand View took the fifth set to win the match.

Set One: Grand View University 23 | Missouri Valley College 25

The two teams battled throughout the first set until Missouri Valley pulled away for the 25-23 win. Both teams finished the match with 18 kills. GV had 28 total attacks while MVC only had 25 total attacks.

Set Two: Grand View University 25 | Missouri Valley College 22

GV came back from an early four-point deficit to finish the set victorious from a Felix Chapman (SO/San Jose De Las Lajas, Cuba) kill from an Alfredo Batista (SR/Bayamon, Puerto Rico) assist. GV recorded 10 kills with a .238 hitting percentage while MVC recorded 10 kills for a .000 hitting percentage.

Set Three: Grand View University 25 | Missouri Valley College 18

Grand View kept the momentum going as they never lost the lead in the third set and eventually won the game by seven points. The two teams tied again in team kills with 11, but Grand View had a .474 hitting percentage while Missouri Valley only had a .120 hitting percentage.

Set Four: Grand View University 18 | Missouri Valley College 25

The fourth set started slowly for Grand View falling to a 12-17 deficit. GV stayed in the game recording 10 team kills, but MVC came out on top with 12 team kills.

Set Five: Grand View University 16 | Missouri Valley College 14

GV took an early 9-5 lead, but MVC started slowly closing the gap for the teams to go point-for-point at the end of the set until GV clinched the win 16-14. Grand View edged Missouri Valley recording 10 kills with a .467 hitting percentage whereas MCV recorded nine kills with a .438 hitting percentage.

Players of Notice…

Tim Johnson led the offense with 15 kills and a .500 hitting percentage while Tigre Gomez (JR/Carolina, Puerto Rico) led the defense with six digs.

Grand View is back on the road this Friday, February 2nd to take on Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at 6:00 pm.
