San Juan 70.3

0
I dusted off the cobwebs at San Juan 70.3. It was my first time here and I really enjoyed the race!

Swim: I felt like I had a decent start and I was on some feet.  On the second turn (about 400 meters in), the person I was drafting off of lost the feet of the pack of 5 other swimmers.  I went around him but by this time that group was creeping away. I swam the last 75% solo. I only swam a 29 minute 1.2 mile swim. I felt like I should have swam about 90 seconds to 2 minutes quicker. I know the swim is something I can't slack at because it's the sport where I lose my fitness the fastest. I just recently started working with a new swim masters group where I am pushed. I just need to put in consistent hard work in the water again to get back to where I was before.

Bike: I felt pretty good on my new Falco V bike.  I had literally built it up a week ago so I didn't have many miles on it.  Regardless I felt like I had my position dialed in. I rode a 2:08 which was about 20 seconds slower than the fastest bike split. I pushed an avg of 308 watts according to my calibrated Stages Cycling power meter (not sure what the NP was because I haven't downloaded it yet). I've done practically all of my riding on the trainer so I was pleased with my bike.

Run: I quickly slipped on my Skechers GoRun 4 in trainsition and I was off.  I was in 10th place off the bike.  It was a two loop run course and it was hot out there! On the first loop I ran alone and didn't catch anyone.  On the second lap I started to feel better and I passed 5 people in the last lap. With about 1.5 miles I over took Justin Dearr who was in 5th place. I then put on another whole minute in the last 1.5 miles.  I felt really strong at the finish. If I had another mile I knew I could of caught and passed 3rd place as the guys infront of me were fading.

Overall I was happy with the race.  I feel like I am a rookie at the half ironman distance since I hardly race half's.
