Richard Murray produces another gutsy display for Hamburg bronze

0

JOHANNESBURG – Richard Murray continued his resurgence, finishing third at the Hamburg ITU World Triathlon on Saturday.

The South African triathlon ace claimed his most prestigious victory when he won the WTS Leeds over the Olympic distance last month.

He turned in another gutsy performance in Hamburg, where he produced another characteristic sprint in the run leg to earn his place on the podium.

Murray came out of the waterway down the field, but clawed his way back on the bike.

The South African and series leader Mario Mola reeled in the leaders at the halfway point thanks to a blistering run.

The bike leg saw Briton Jonny Brownlee, Frenchman Vincent Luis and Norway’s Kristian Blummenfelt opening an early gap on the chasing pack.

Mola consolidated his lead at the top of the WTS leaderboard and strengthened his chance of winning his third consecutive title, winning the race in a time of 53 minutes and 24 seconds (53:24)

Luis finished second in a time of 53:29, with Murray bagging the bronze medal with a hard-fought 53:32.

Murray has launched himself into the top 10 on the WTS rankings into eighth place.

Commonwealth Games champion Henri Schoeman sat out this round, and he is still among the top 10 triathletes in the world.
