Late 90s Cannondale w RSX brifters

I have older Cannondale r400 with 2 gear front derailleur. I was wondering if a 3rd chaining would be worth adding. I have RSX brifters. And what would i be looking at cost wise?

I use primarily for attending (competing isn't really the right word) triathlons. Sprint and Olympic, nothing too...
