Sports Briefs: Tam tennis advances to NCS semis

Tam High battled to a 5-1 opening-round victory over Mission San Jose in Tuesday’s North Coast Section girls tennis Open Division bracket. The No. 5 seed Red-tailed Hawks are scheduled to face top-seeded University in Thursday’s semifinals, although a rain storm is forecast for the day.

Five of the six completed matches went to a third-set tiebreaker against No. 4 Mission San Jose. Bianca Botero-Cortes won 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (1) at No. 2 singles, while Tam’s Siena Moglen beat the darkness with a 7-5, 4-6, 10-7 win at No. 3 singles. Tam won two of the three doubles matches.

  • No. 6 Redwood swept doubles play, but fell 4-3 to No. 3 American in Tuesday’s Open Division matchup. The Giants’ Alessia Balliet and Julia Povio won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Adrienne DeMos and Scarlett Hackwell won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Caroline Simon and Skye Gould wrapped up the doubles sweep, 6-2, 6-4.
  • Top-seeded Monte Vista swept No. 16 Marin Catholic, 7-0, in first-round NCS D-I play. The Wildcats’ Ariana Bazan and Christiane Zuber both lost 6-1, 6-3, at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, respectively.
  • No. 10 Branson fell 4-3 to No. 7 Dublin in the first round of the NCS D-I bracket. The Bulls won a pair of doubles victories, and Olivia Shekhou held on for a three-set win at No. 4 singles.
  • No. 11 San Marin lost 7-0 to No. 6 California in the first round of the NCS D-I bracket. The Mustangs’ Divya Lourdu put up a fight at No. 3 singles in a 6-3, 7-5 loss to Mahita Chang.

Girls volleyball

No. 15 seed San Marin (19-20) fell to No. 2 Lincoln (34-8) in straight sets, 25-18, 25-13, 25-20, in Tuesday’s opening round of the NorCal Division III playoffs.
