Rawal returns to action

LALITPUR: Olympian taekwondo player Nisha Rawal, who was suspended for one year along with three other players and an official of Nepal Taekwondo Association, returned to action in the ninth Korean Ambassador National Open Taekwondo Championship on Monday after the NTA lifted her ban.

The NTA had suspended four players — Rawal, Yan Kumari Chaulagain, Gyani Chunara and Tara Kumar Rayamajhi — along with Executive Committee Member Shyam Dangol for one year on June 3 after they failed to report to the association within the given time period.

They had gone to the United States to participate in the US Open in February.

NTA Secretary and Spokesperson Deepak Bista said the disciplinary committee reviewed the decision upon the request from the players. “As all the players were affiliated to Nepali Army, we wrote to the NA for clearance. The NA refused to give clearance to the players except for Rawal, who was no longer affiliated to the departmental side,” said Bista.

“We cannot do anything on other players’ case as all of them are facing departmental action.” Representing Farwest Province in team Kyorugi, the 2016 Rio Olympic Games participant Rawal defeated all four opponents, including SA Games gold medallist Manita Shahi, on Monday.
