Pick up a paddle on National Table Tennis Day

An international table tennis star will be on hand in Liverpool to help get people into the sport on National Table Tennis Day – Thursday, 18 July.

The city council’s physical activity and sports development team, Table Tennis England and Liverpool League players will be near Hartley’s Bridge at the Royal Albert Dock Liverpool with table tennis tables from 11am – 4pm, encouraging people to pick up a paddle and have a go.

Also present will be Andrea Holt, who represented England at four successive World Table Tennis Championships from 1991 until 1997, competed in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics and won ten English National Table Tennis Championships, including five singles titles between 1991 and 2004.

There is also a ‘Ping Parlour’ in St Johns Shopping Centre from 11am until 2.30pm with fun and activities and a competition at 1pm.

The events are part of an annual celebration of the sport introduced by Table Tennis England in 2014 designed to give the table tennis family a chance to come together, have fun and promote all that is good about the sport – and to get more people playing.

Each year thousands of people take part in events at clubs, schools, business and town centres around England.

People can and share a photo or video on social media with the hashtag #tabletennisday and be in with the chance of winning a prize!

Cllr Tim Moore, Mayoral lead for organised sport, said: “This is a good opportunity for people to come along and try a sport which is easy to pick up and a lot of fun.

“We will have staff on hand to help get people started and it looks all set to be a great event that will help get people active.”
