Great Britain, France, Ireland and The Netherlands name strong teams for European Aquatics Short Course Swimming Championships Lublin 2025
Great Britain, which topped the medals table at the 2023 European Aquatics Short Course Swimming Championships in Otopeni, has signalled its high ambitions for next month’s 2025 edition in Lublin by naming a team stacked with talent.
Matt Richards, Duncan Scott and Tom Dean, Olympic men’s 4x200m freestyle champions at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Games, are in a 17-strong Aquatics GB squad for the Championships that will run in Poland from December 2 to 7.
Richards and Scott are set to defend their respective 200m freestyle and 200m medley titles, while Dean – who also won the individual 200m freestyle title at Tokyo 2020 – will seek to go one better than the silver he won in the 400m freestyle when these Championships were held at Glasgow in 2019.
Freya Anderson, a mixed 4x100m medley champion at the Tokyo 2020 Games, will also defend a title in the women’s 200m freestyle.
The squad includes the rapidly rising talent of Filip Nowacki, the 18-year-old Millfield schoolboy who won 100m/200m breaststroke junior titles at European and world level this year.
Jack Skerry, who won European U23 gold in the 100m backstroke, also makes his debut in these Championships.
Great Britain finished the 2023 Championships in Otopeni, Romania with a total of 23 medals, of which nine were gold – one place ahead of Italy, who won seven golds in a total of 22.
France, third in that medals table with seven golds from 23, have also named a strong team that includes the world 50m and 100m butterfly champion Maxime Grousset, who won 100m freestyle gold and 100m butterfly silver at these Championships two years ago, and Anastasiia Kirpichnikova, women’s 1500m freestyle silver medallist at the Paris 2024 Games.
Also in French colours will be 30-year-old Beryl Gastaldello, who has so far amassed seven medals in these Championships including two 4x50m freestyle golds, and Mewen Tomac, the defending 50m and 100m backstroke champion.
Intriguingly the French have named 20-year-old open water specialist Sacha Velly, who won European and world junior 10km titles last year.
Ireland’s 13-strong team includes Olympic men’s 800m freestyle champion Daniel Wiffen, who won three golds at Otopeni 2023.
Also named are Ellen Walshe and John Shortt, who won European junior gold at the 100m backstroke and world junior titles at the 100m and 200m backstroke.
The Netherlands, fourth-placed in the medals table at Otopeni 2023 with a total of 11 medals including six golds, have also announced a strong team.
It includes 24-year-old Caspar Corbeau, the Paris 2024 200m breaststroke bronze medallist, who set a short course record in that event at the recent World Aquatics Swimming World Cup series, becoming the first swimmer to break two minutes for the event as he clocked 1:59.52.
Also in the Dutch team is Marrit Steenbergen, who retained her world 100m freestyle title in Singapore this summer.
