Singapore 2025: Spain opens world artistic swimming campaign with two medals through Gonzalez and Tio Casas
Spain added the first two of what they hope will be many artistic swimming medals at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore thanks to Dennis Gonzalez and Iris Tio Casas.
Gonzalez earned his third consecutive world medal in men’s solo competition, and his first in the technical category, as he took silver behind 30-year-old neutral athlete Aleksandr Maltsev – who has won four world titles in mixed events.
The 21-year-old, who took men’s solo free gold in 2023 and silver in Doha last year, finished on 241.1667, with Maltsev – making his first solo appearance at a World Championships – claiming gold on 251.7133 and bronze going to Mexico’s Diego Villalobos Carrillo on 238.1600.
“The emotions have been inside of me since Doha (World Aquatics Championships 2024),” Gonzalez told World Aquatics. “In Doha, I was fourth in the technical solo, and I tried to improve and work for this. Now I have it, and I am so excited.”
Britain’s 19-year-old Ranjuo Tomblin, successively European champion in the men’s solo free and men’s solo technical, was fifth on 228.4316, one place above Italy’s 18-year-old Filippo Pelati on 228.0800.
Tio Casas claimed bronze in the women’s solo technical final in 260.2917, finishing one place ahead of Austria’s double European champion of last year, Vasiliki Alexandri of Austria, who finished on 253.8417 and Germany’s 21-year-old Klara Bleyer on 253.2892.
Gold went to China’s 19-year-old rising star Huiyan Xu, who earned her first world title on 272.9917, with neutral athlete Vasilina Khandoshka claiming silver on 260.5416.
“I feel emotional, I’m very happy to win a medal because I have improved a lot this season and I’m happy it went that way,” Tio Casas said.
“I know that there are a lot of strong soloists this year, but this is good for me so I can improve a lot. For me it’s more challenging because I do teams, duets and solo. So I’m happy with the result and very proud.”
