Ryan Poles Is Said To Be “Mad” About Justin Fields

The Chicago Bears came into the 2022 offseason with a considerable challenge. Not only would they have to find a new general manager to replace Ryan Pace, but they’d have to determine if those candidates had reservations about working with quarterback Justin Fields. The last thing the organization wants to do is saddle their next leader with a QB he doesn’t want or believe in. So it was unsurprisingly one of the first questions they’d ask in interviews. Including Ryan Poles.

Now the newest Bears GM is in place, having inked the deal on Tuesday, January 25th. As yet he hasn’t spoken to the media aside from a quick hello to fans on Twitter. So it’s been difficult to find any information on what exactly happened during his two meetings with George McCaskey and his search team. True to form, it was Jeff Hughes of Da Bears Blog who delivered. During an extended appearance on the Irish Bears Show, he revealed that Poles made one thing crystal clear to the team brass.

Fields is going to be his guy moving forward.

Not much room for questions there. It sounds like Poles and the Chiefs scouting department were big fans of Fields leading up to the 2021 draft. Obviously, they were never going to select him because they have Patrick Mahomes. Still, teams always scout top quarterback prospects. Remember that Matt Nagy was huge on Fields and he came from the Chiefs system back in 2017. The same one that drafted Mahomes.

When looking at skill sets, the two share a lot in common. Good size, great mobility, strong arms, deep accuracy, and toughness. It shouldn’t be a surprise that Ryan Poles became a fan. Even better is the fact he knows exactly how to build around Fields moving forward. He saw the blueprint in action during his years with Kansas City. Expect him to focus heavily on the offensive line with resources shifting to wide receiver and tight end once that task is done.

Ryan Poles has a lot of work to do for Fields

The reality is this offense has been one of the worst in the NFL for the past several seasons for a reason. Yes, the coaching has been a huge issue. That is the first order of business Poles must get squared away. Finding a head coach that can put a solid and comprehensive system in place for Fields. However, the other reality is the Bears roster on offense just isn’t talented enough. Their offensive line has leaned on too many cheap free agents and later round draft picks. The wide receivers suffer from too much inconsistency and they lack explosion at tight end.

That is a lot of stuff for Poles to fix and he might not be able to do it in one offseason. Not without a considerable amount of luck. Pace left behind just five draft picks for 2022 including no 1st rounder. There are also several bloated contracts on the payroll that won’t be easy to remove due to dead money considerations.

So Poles will have to get creative in finding ways to upgrade.

This may be a year where he’s forced to play it cheap at certain positions while focusing his limited resources where he believes they’re needed the most. Some will argue it’s wide receiver. Others the offensive line. Either way, the mission is clear. Poles plans to do everything in his power to make Fields a success.
