A’s bench coach Ryan Christenson to join Bob Melvin’s coaching staff with Padres, per reports

Oakland A’s bench coach Ryan Christenson will join manager Bob Melvin’s coaching staff as bench coach for the San Diego Padres, according to reports.

Christenson had served as the A’s bench coach since 2018 next to Melvin. Christenson has spent the majority of his playing and coaching career with the A’s, who drafted him out of Pepperdine University in the 1995 MLB draft’s 10th round and played six seasons with the organization, including four with the big league team as an outfielder.

Christenson will be crossed off the list of potential managers to replace Melvin, who left his post as A’s manager after 11 seasons to lead the budding Padres team. Still potentially in play as in-house options to manage the A’s in 2022 include Mark Kotsay, who has interviewed for vacant managerial positions around the league in past years.

The A’s could also bring former A’s third base coach Matt Williams, who is currently serving as the Kia Tigers manager in the KBO League. If the A’s suddenly decide to splurge on a manager despite indications that they’re cutting already slim costs, Ron Washington could be a target to bring back to Oakland.

With Major League Baseball in lockout and the A’s direction in disarray, hiring a new manager has likely been moved to the back burner. Oakland’s brass, looking to shed salary, has reportedly been taking calls on their team-controlled stars such as Matt Olson.

Christenson last managed the Triple-A Nashville Sounds, the A’s former affiliate, in 2017 after leading the Double-A Midland RockHounds to back-to-back Texas League championships in 2015 and 2016.
