MLB should be embarrassed by ump's brutal performance in Astros-Red Sox Game 4

This is the online version of our morning newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

The general rule of thumb for being an ump or a referee or an official in any game is that you don’t want to become a part of the story or have your name be known by anyone watching the game.

Think about it – there are lots of nameless umps calling MLB games. We may see them on TV but chances are we can’t say “Hey, that (insert name) is having a good game!”

The good umps and refs remain nameless while doing their jobs and doing them well.

There are, however, some notoriously bad umpires in baseball whose names are well known by fans because of such bad performances. Angel Hernandez, for one, is known by everyone for being really bad at his job. So is Joe West, who thankfully retired at the end of this season but made some bad calls on his way out.

Last night’s Game 4 of the ALCS had one of those predictably bad umps behind home plate and things went as you would expect them to go – not great!

Just look at these tweets by ESPN’s Jeff Passan that show just how bad of a night Laz Diaz had behind the plate:

Then there’s this:

While one of those calls really hurt the Red Sox, both teams had to deal with an unpredictable strike zone which had an impact on the game throughout the night. That stinks for a Wednesday night regular season game in May but it’s 100 times worse for Game 4 of the ALCS when so much is at stake. Hitters shouldn’t have to go to the plate worried about the size of the ump’s strike zone or about the bad calls that have been made previously in the game. That isn’t good for them and it’s not good for the game.

I mean, look at this pitch that was a called strike 3.

I don’t know how MLB allows the bad umps to get behind-the-plate duties for such big games. This tweet from before Game 1 of the ALCS showed just how bad Diaz is at his job and correctly predicted that Game 4 would be a mess. If these people can find that info why can’t baseball then make a smart business decision and avoid such a situation?

How does MLB just keep allowing these sub-par umps from messing up games and giving the league bad headlines that it would probably rather avoid?

It doesn’t seem hard yet this is Major League Baseball, which is run by Rob Manfred, who has shown us countless times that he’s not good at his job.

Hey, maybe he should get behind the plate! He couldn’t be much worse than some of these guys.
