‘He was WELL off it’ – Gary Neville claims Harry Maguire was not ready for Man Utd return at Leicester after injury

GARY NEVILLE believes Harry Maguire was ‘well off it’ during Manchester United’s defeat to Leicester at the weekend.

The England centre-back returned from injury to start at the King Power Stadium but endured a horror 90 minutes as the Red Devils were beaten 4-2 by Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Maguire looked lacklustre throughout the game and was at fault for Leicester’s first goal as he was caught in possession before Youri Tielemans superbly lobbed the ball over David de Gea.

And Neville does not believe the Man Utd captain was at 100 per cent ahead of the game on Saturday.

Speaking on an Instagram Live, he said: “Maguire is overrated? No, Maguire is a fantastic player.

“Maguire wasn’t ready yesterday, he was nowhere near being ready for that match. I think he was thrust back in because of Varane’s injury. Maguire was well off it yesterday.

“But I think he’s the right type, Manchester United need more like him. Maguire’s not good enough? We’re on the wrong path here if we’re now starting to say Harry Maguire is not the right type of signing.

“I think Harry Maguire is the perfect type of character for United. I think he’s performed well since he’s come to the club.

“Yesterday he was miles off it, he was nowhere near at the level in terms of fitness-wise and we’ve all been there as players.

“But this is certainly not the time to start throwing the baby out with the bathwater.”

United’s loss at Leicester means they have now picked up just one point from their last three Premier League games.

And they have dropped to sixth in the table as a result of their insipid displays.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been heavily criticised for the poor performances of late as his side head into an incredibly tough run of games.

United’s next five matches are two Champions League ties against Atalanta and a trio of Premier League fixtures against Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City.
