Chelsea boss Tuchel admits Blues need strong player who can play with back to goal amid Romelu Lukaku transfer link

CHELSEA boss Thomas Tuchel refused to speak directly about Romelu Lukaku – but admitted the type of player the team needs fits his exact profile.

The German boss saw his wasteful Blues miss numerous chances as they blew a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with Tottenham.

Timo Werner was again wasteful in front of goal and Christian Pulisic also missed a good chance.

Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku has now asked the Italian giants to allow him to leave and seal a return to Chelsea.

The Blues have had two bids rejected, with Inter holding out for £100MILLION for the Belgian star.

Lukaku had settled in Milan and looked happy to stay after scoring 64 goals in two seasons to help the club end a decade of hurt to win Serie A.

But once Antonio Conte left and Inter informed the squad that budgets would be cut, selling rather than strengthening the squad, the ex-Manchester United star’s position began to change.

Having shown loyalty after Manchester City’s approach at the end of last season, he did not want to miss out on another opportunity to play for one of the best sides in Europe in the knowledge Inter would be unable to compete.

So he told them it was not a case of offering a wage rise to get him to stay, and instead requested they accept the right bid when it comes in and let him return to the Premier League.

Although Tuchel would not be drawn on Lukaku specifically, he made it clear he is looking for a big man up top.

He said: “I will not talk about players who don’t play in my squad. He is a fantastic player but a player from Inter and with all due respect I will not talk about him.

“I think with the exit from Olivier Giroud from the type of players we could use, a player used to playing with their backs to goal, whose strength is to keep possession from long balls.

“So we can add this direct style of play to our portfolio and this is the characteristic of player that is not Tammy [Abraham], Timo [Werner] or Kai [Havertz].

“So this is a profile we don’t have in the squad and could be useful, but not for any cost and not hectic or in panic as no matter what happens we will be competitive and have trust in our guys.”

Sources in Italy claim Inter expect a third offer to come in by the weekend, and the deal could be wrapped up early next week if all details are settled on.

The latest bid saw Chelsea offer a package worth around £85m that included left-back Marcos Alonso, but Inter are holding out for more.

COMPETITION: SPOT THE BALL TO WIN A CAR AND CASH

Champions League winners Chelsea have prioritised a world-class frontman for this transfer window.

It’s thought Borussia Dortmund goal machine Erling Haaland remains their dream signing.

But Lukaku is a far more realistic target, especially for this transfer window.
