SAN JOSE – Despite coming in on a three-match win streak that propelled it to second place in the MLS table, the San Jose Earthquakes still couldn’t get past the Seattle Sounders.
Christian Roldan’s goal in the 18th minute held up as Seattle won 1-0 Wednesday night at PayPal Park.
The first-place Sounders are unbeaten in 14 straight matches against the Quakes dating back to 2015, the longest active unbeaten streak in MLS for one team against another.
Roldan scored on a scorcher from outside the box, just one minute after a potential Quakes penalty shot for a handball in the box was reversed after video review.
Seattle (4-0-1, 13 points) still hasn’t allowed a goal from open play this season. In the 37th minute, Cade Cowell redirected a cross from Eric Remedi that was pushed aside by a diving Stefan Frei. The Quakes (3-2-0, 9 points) also just missed on a series of crosses during second-half injury time after Roldan went in goal to replace Frei, who was injured after Seattle used all of its subs.
San Jose remains in second place in the league standings with nine points, ahead of LA Galaxy on goal differential.
The team does not announce attendance numbers, but about 5,000 tickets were sold, roughly 28 percent of capacity, as the Quakes continue to ramp up the number of fans it allows. Roughly 3,600 tickets were sold to the team’s first two home games.
The Quakes return to PayPal Park Saturday at 7 p.m. to face Portland. https://twitter.com/SoundersFC/status/1392675837338550274
