Video: Canelo Alvarez, Billy Joe Saunders have tense faceoff after making weight

Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders are ready for their super middleweight championship clash.

Both champions weighed in for Saturday’s main event at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, with Canelo coming in at 167.4 pounds pounds and Saunders at 167.8 pounds. The two faced off after weighing in and the encounter was tense, but otherwise free of antics.

Earlier this week, Saunders suggested that the bout might be cancelled due to issues that he and his father had with the size of the ring, but he later said that the issue was sorted.

Canelo brings three world championships to this encounter, the WBA, WBC, and The Ring titles, while Saunders looks to add those belts to his WBO title. Saturday’s winner walks out with all of the gold.

AT&T Stadium is expected to be sold out with over 70,000 fans in attendance. The fans attending Friday’s weigh-ins were decidedly in favor of Mexico’s Canelo.

Canelo has won six straight fights and is unbeaten in his past 14 outings. He is coming off of a successful defense of his titles against Avni Yıldırım in February and hasn’t lost a fight since February 2013.

Saunders, who hails from England, enters Saturday’s matchup with an unblemished 30-0 record. He won a vacant WBO super middleweight title in May 2019 and has since successfully defended it twice.

Alvarez vs. Saunders airs Saturday evening on the DAZN streaming service, with the event beginning at 8 p.m. ET.
