Max Holloway aims to fight twice more in 2021: 'The reign is gonna continue'

0 3

After returning to the win column in a big way, Max Holloway is looking to continue riding his momentum with an active 2021.

Former UFC featherweight champion Holloway (22-6 MMA, 18-6 UFC) snapped a two-fight skid with a masterful display against Calvin Kattar at UFC on ABC 1 in January as he rebounded from his narrow split-decision loss to champion Alexander Volkanovski in July 2020.

With Volkanovski scheduled to defend his title against Brian Ortega in the co-main event of UFC 260 on March 27, Holloway has no doubt that he has positioned himself for another shot at the title.

“After the fight that night, he (White) went to the media and he said what he said,” Holloway told MMA Junkie. “With Alex and Ortega coming up, everybody knows I’m the cloud over that fight. At the end of the day, let them focus on each other, and then, when it’s all said and done, the reign is gonna continue, so I can’t wait.”

Holloway has history with both men, having dominated Ortega at UFC 231 and dropping two decision losses to Volkanovski – one in which he lost his title and the other that he was confident he had done enough to win.

But, despite the storyline surrounding both men, Holloway isn’t too concerned with the outcome of the upcoming featherweight title fight.

“No preference at all,” Holloway said. “May the best man win. I just want the best guys across from me. When it’s all said and done, when these lights, when these interviews are done, when I’m long gone from fighting, when I’m long gone from this earth, I wanna be in history. I wanna be one of those guys that fought the who’s who names of MMA and that’s what you do. So I ain’t picking and choosing, and I ain’t got no favorites.”

Having fought just once in 2020, Holloway hopes to replicate his activity from 2019, when he got to compete three times.

“In a perfect world, if I got to make up my plan for this year, is I would like to fight during the summer and then maybe try and get a December fight in,” Holloway said. “I want to fight three times this year, maybe get in there in the summertime, July hopefully, and then get in on another card with UFC so we’ll see what happens. That’s just what I want to do in a perfect world, fight in July, fight in December.”
