How world’s greatest racehorse Ghaiyyath will net billionaire owner at least £28,500 A DAY in new career

THE world’s top-rated horse Ghaiyyath will earn at least £28,500 A DAY when he begins his new stallion career.

Owned by Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai, his fee was announced earlier this week, while he was also crowned the world’s best horse for 2020.

Ghaiyyath will form part of the Sheikh’s Darley European breeding empire after his glorious 2020 and will stand at Kildangan Stud in Co. Kildare, Ireland.

He secured victories in the Dubai Millennium Stakes, Coronation Cup, Eclipse Stakes and International Stakes in a memorable final year in action.

Prior to that he’d won the Grosser Preis von Baden by 14 lengths in 2019 and the Prix d’Harcourt.

Ghaiyyath was bought by the Godolphin stable as a foal in 2015 for just shy of £1million and trained by Charlie Appelby at Newmarket.

The son of Dubawi, his career earnings as a racehorse stand at £759,161, but he’s now set to bring in considerably more than that when he begins his new career.

Dubawi remains one of the world’s leading stallions with a fee of £250,000, despite the cuts in price across most of the industry.

Darley’s director of stallions, Sam Bullard, said: “It is a source of great pride that the best horse in the world this year, and the best two year old for a generation, are not just retiring to Darley having raced for Godolphin but are themselves the sons of Darley stallions.”

He added: “While 2020 has undoubtedly been a challenge there has been remarkable resilience in parts of the yearling market and buyers have shown great confidence in the product of European breeders’ labours.”

On him being crowned the top horse of 2020 Trainer Appelby said: “I’m obviously delighted, first for Ghaiyyath and also His Highness Sheikh Mohammed.

“It’s a much-deserved award, given what he did this summer – he wore his heart on his sleeve, and for me and the team he brightened this summer up in what we know was a testing season.

“All credit goes to the team and Godolphin and, most importantly, Sheikh Mohammed for allowing us to train a horse like this and allowing us to give him the time that was needed to come to the fore.

“I’ve been fortunate over the last couple of years to have him over 10 and 12 furlongs and then Blue Point over five furlongs, and both were at their best at the age of five – which is all thanks to Godolphin allowing us to keep them in training, so they can show what they can do as the finished article.

“Darley Stud were very keen to get their hands on him once they knew he was coming to the end of his career, and I’m sure he’ll be a prized asset. He’s a third-generation sire after Dubai Millennium and Dubawi – they all competed at the highest level. He’s got a fantastic pedigree and is striking-looking.”
