Roxanne Modafferi 'stoked' to move past rematches, draw new name at UFC on ESPN 20

ABU DHABI – Roxanne Modafferi is looking forward to meeting a new face next Wednesday.

Modafferi (25-17 MMA, 4-5 UFC), who’s had her fair share of rematches in her career, will take on Viviane Araujo at UFC on ESPN 20, which takes place on “Fight Island” in Abu Dhabi. While her motivation never has wavered, the idea of a fresh face excites Modafferi.

“I was stoked it’s somebody new,” Modafferi told reporters, including MMA Junkie, on Friday ahead of UFC on ESPN 20. “I’ve had so many rematches in my career, I’m like, ‘Yes, a new person.'”

She continued, “I don’t think I really thought about it until I fought Andrea Lee, and people kept asking me about rematches , so then it made me think, ‘Oh, cool, yeah.’ So I never have a problem with motivation. I always want to prove my skills, grow and evolve.”

Modafferi has fought a slew of tough opponents throughout her career. She’s played spoiler on numerous occasions by bouncing both Maycee Barber and Antonina Shevchenko out of the ranks of the unbeaten, as she continues cementing herself in the flyweight division.

But Modafferi isn’t focusing so much on climbing the rankings. She just wants to get her hand raised.

“Just win,” Modafferi said. “If I get the title shot, great. I know that’s a very political thing based on stuff, so I’m just gonna keep winning, keep smashing and keep improving.”
