Missed Fists: Flyweight prospect Manon Fiorot captures UAE Warriors title, Kade Rutulo scores smooth buggy choke, more

Manon Fiorot celebrates a title fight victory at UAE Warriors 14 in Abu Dhabi on Nov. 27 | @Grabaka_Hitman, Twitter

Welcome to the latest edition of Missed Fists where we shine a light on fights from across the globe that may have been overlooked in these hectic times where it seems like there’s an MMA show every other day.

Last week was all about Fight Circus Vol. 2, so we have some catching up to do. Let’s not waste any time.

Manon Fiorot vs. Gabriela Campo
Dan Collins vs. Mohammad Yahya
Hussein Salem vs. Shakhriyor Juraev

When people look back at 2020—when they’re not just uncontrollably crying—I hope that they’ll be able to appreciate women’s flyweight quietly becoming one of the more intriguing divisions in MMA. From the UFC to Bellator to Invicta, the 125-pound field has been moving and we have strong champions in both Valentina Shevchenko and Ilima-Lei Macfarlane, plus a batch of legitimate challengers with fighters migrating from both bantamweight and strawweight.

Add Manon Fiorot (5-1) to the list of flyweights to watch. Though we’ve yet to mention her in Missed Fists (slap on the wrist for us), the 30-year-old went 3-0 this year with all of her wins coming by finish, and is poised for an even bigger 2021.

Here she is capturing a UAE Warriors title in Abu Dhabi last Friday:

Fiorot’s one loss was in her pro debut to current Bellator standout Leah McCourt. Don’t be surprised if that rematch happens sooner rather than later.

Speaking of prospects, England’s Dan Collins improved to 4-0 against his most experienced opponent yet in Mohammad Yahya (7-3), securing a second-round submission to make it four finishes in his first four pro fights.

Beautiful work by Collins to open his man up for the D’Arce choke.

However, Hussein Salem’s armbar of Shakhriyor Juraev might have been even better.

Watch how Salem just peels Juraev away from the fence and immediately throws that armbar up. Dead to rights.

Kade Rutulo vs. PJ Barch

When it comes to the best submission of the week though, there’s really no topping Kade Rutulo’s buggy choke of PJ Barch at the 2020 Combat Jiujitsu World Championships (available on UFC Fight Pass) in Cancun, Mexico, this past Sunday.

For more info, check out this writeup by Bloody Elbow’s Anton Tabuena. Apparently, teenage brothers Kade and Tye have been absolutely tearing up the competitive jiu-jitsu scene and this event was just the latest showcase of their talents.

I don’t think anyone can blame Barch for succumbing to this move because it’s unlikely he had any idea what the hell was happening. People always talk about the high risk of getting embarrassed in MMA, but man, good jiu-jitsu can apparently make fools of the best of us.

Emanuel Lopes vs. Florisbergue dos Anjos
Marcio dos Santos vs. Wellington Borges
Matheus Camilo vs. Wadson Motta
Mike Davidson vs. Levy Ronieri

And now on to the “get your chin checked” portion of our feature, which sees no shortage of wicked KOs thanks to the Shooto Brasil event that went down in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday.

Emanuel Lopes had Florisbergue dos Anjos flopping like LeBron James here after cracking him with a clean, straight shot right down the middle.

This is certainly one of the more unique Humpty Dumpty award winners we’ve seen. In fairness to dos Anjos, he’d taken a lot of punishment up to this point, so if he decided that one more punch like that was a sign for him to lay down and get out of this fight by any means necessary, then kudos to him for having good sense.

Twenty-two-year-old featherweight Marcio dos Santos made it 7-0 with seven finishes, just smoking Wellington Borges with a pair of hammer lefts.

That first punch is an attitude adjuster if I’ve ever seen one and you just knew the second one was going to end the fight. Dos Santos is definitely one to watch.

This next finish by Matheus Camilo has to be admired just for the sheer effort that went into it.

That fast flurry is either the work of a man who’s either so determined to get the finish that he’s leaving it all out there or he’s so inexperienced that he doesn’t realize he might still have to compete for another five minutes.

Last of this batch, but certainly not least, the decidedly un-Brazilian sounding Mike Davidson just walked Levy Ronieri down and smoked him with a left hook.

Mauricio Diaz vs. Andres Sanchez

There’s so much to love about this KO by 22-year-old Mauricio Diaz. The precision of the left cross, the nastiness of the follow-up punches (okay, maybe we don’t love those so much), and then the awkward backflip that was somehow perfectly in-sync with a lighting effect in the cage? Did he plan that out beforehand? Because if so, another reason this highlight is memorable!

That finish came from Caray 4 in Cali Valle Del Cauca, Colombia, this past Saturday. The show is available for free replay on YouTube.

Darina Mazdyuk vs. Grigory Chistyakov

Before we proceed, I probably should address the elephant in the room (no pun intended). You all know what I’m talking about.

This.

That’s about as freaky as freak show fights get these days and since that is our jurisdiction here at Missed Fists, then it can’t just be ignored. That said, it’s been written about on the site already and the clip has understandably gone viral, so was it really missed? Even Marc Goddard chimed in on this spectacle.

Personally, I didn’t love it. Even if this happened at Fight Circus, I like to believe I’d have the impartiality to call this out for what it is: ghoulish. Just everything about the presentation feels more exploitative than anything and that’s not fun.

Hopefully everyone got a nice paycheck out of this, but I’m with Goddard. I don’t know. Watch the whole thing for yourself if you want.

Mikola Kovalenko vs. Vladislav Saltanov
Wiverton Deck vs. David Maklouf
Devon Dixon vs. Mike Olaya
Lucas Marte vs. Ty Kalista

Now back to the wholesome violence, you know, the kind that grandma used to make.

Amateur fight? No problem. We spinnin’ anyway.

That’s Mikola Kovalenko smacking Vladislav Saltanov at the Kharkiv MMA Cup show in Kharkiv, Ukraine, this past Saturday. A free replay of that event is available on YouTube.

We had more spinning stuff at Mega Fight Champions 2 (free replay available on YouTube) in Manaus, Brazil, last Friday. Wiverton Deck rotated that body and just drove a kick right into David Maklouf’s liver.

MaklOOF!

Reaching way back to Nov. 22 for a highlight that was missed because of all the Fight Circus excitement, we have a pair of knockouts from Titan FC 65 (available for replay on UFC Fight Pass) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

First, here’s Devon Dixon kicking the crap out of Mike Olaya’s leg:

And then Lucas Marte landing a straight right on the button even as opponent Ty Kalista was in the middle of an awkward fall.

It almost looks like Marte was going for a body shot and Kalista counted by moving his head in the way. That’s next level.

Pablo Burgos vs. Luciano Berrios

Heading over to Santiago, Chile, for a Live Fight Night event (free replay available on YouTube), we have both a sweet knee knockout and a regrettable adventure in officiating.

Not to take away from Pablo Burgos’ win, but what was that referee doing? Just had to hop over to get a second look at that pummeling to be sure it was over?

Dmitriy Babkin vs. Artem Belakh

We had so many great subs and KOs this week, why not close things out with a finish that combines the best of both worlds?

From RCC: Intro 10 on Nov. 21 in Ekaterinburg, Russia, unbeaten bantamweight Dmitriy Babkin (5-0) made Artem Belakh (7-2) pay for testing his ground game.

Credit to Belakh for attacking the leg, but Babkin turned the tables on him and then turned his lights off with an airtight arm-triangle choke.

And now that we’re all caught up, now is the time on Sprockets where we dance.
