Dana White has high hopes for Miguel Baeza after UFC on ESPN 18: 'He could be our Puerto Rican star'

LAS VEGAS – Undefeated welterweight Miguel Baeza was handed a big platform to showcase his skills, and he delivered the goods with a second-round arm-triangle finish of Takashi Sato in the co-main event of UFC on ESPN 18.

One man who was particularly impressed with Baeza’s performance was UFC president Dana White, who spoke in glowing terms about the 28-year-old’s potential following the undefeated prospect’s third straight second-round finish since earning a UFC contract on the Contender Series last year.

“He’s a bad boy. He looked awesome, man,” White told reporters, including MMA Junkie, backstage at the UFC Apex after the event. “He’s one of the guys we highlighted this week in ‘If you don’t know…’ and he came out and delivered tonight.”

With the late change to the top of the fight card due to Curtis Blaydes’ positive COVID test, Baeza (10-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) saw his bout with Sato promoted to the co-main event slot, and “Caramel Thunder” took full advantage of his increased exposure with an eye-catching display. White hailed Baeza’s performance and suggested that he had the potential to be a poster boy for the promotion in Puerto Rico.

“He had a primetime spot on ESPN and, in this business, what we do is we put together the platform for you to go out and show everybody who you are, and what you should do is go out and make people talk about you on Sunday and Monday. He did that tonight,” he said. “He went out there and had a huge platform – we came out of the college football game tonight – so yeah, the kid’s a stud. 10-0, Puerto Rican. When New York opens up again, you know what I mean? Get him fighting in New York. I’ve been talking about Puerto Rico, too. We talked about going to Puerto Rico a long time ago, I talked about building a Performance Institute in Puerto Rico, so he could be the guy. … He could be our Puerto Rican star.”
