EDDIE HOWE is odds-on favourite to be appointed the next manager of Celtic.

Betfair have installed the former Cherries boss at 5/6 to replace Neil Lennon, who is under severe pressure at Parkhead after a disappointing start to the campaign.

Howe, 42, is closely followed by 3/1 Marco Silva, who has been out of work since being sacked by Everton in December 2019.

Ex-Hoops manager Gordon Strachan and Hibs’ Jack Ross are a similar price at 7/1 and 17/2 respectively.

Steve Clarke, John Kennedy and David Moyes are all locked at 9/1 with the bookies.

Celtic are now a full 11 points behind Steven Gerrard’s Rangers in the Scottish Premiership standings.

Lennon’s side dropped points again over the weekend with a 2-2 draw away to Hibs and are on the verge of an early Europa League exit.

Supporters have taken to social media to vent their frustrations.

But even so, reports have claimed that Lennon has no intention of stepping down and has the full backing of the board.

Howe, the favourite, left Bournemouth by mutual consent in August after their relegation to the Championship.

But his stock remains high having kept the Cherries in the top-flight for five seasons.

He also guided the club from League Two to the Premier League with three promotions in six seasons – something Harry Redknapp described as a ‘miracle’.

Speculation surrounding Howe’s future has increased after appearing on Monday Night Football yesterday.

He revealed he would return to management for a project that “really motivated” him.

Howe said: “If I decide to get back in, if I am lucky enough to get given an opportunity, I will do that.

“But for me, I do not want to get back in just for the sake of it, it would have to be something that really motivated me.”

TalkSPORT presenter Jim White added further fuel to the fire after revealing that Howe has been in Scotland for a round of golf with Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell.

White said on talkSPORT: “One name that keeps on getting mentioned, and I cannot confirm this, but it’s been reported to me that Eddie Howe was in Scotland recently playing golf with Peter Lawwell.

“Eddie Howe is ready to take a job back in football. Would Eddie Howe be the man for Celtic?

“With all due to respect to Neil who I know is still in the job and I apologise for talking like this, but we have to.”
