Riding Deliver The Dream in a Winter Championship Heat in Flemington, Australia, Mallyon was flung from the horse onto the turf.

The impact of the crash was so very nearly life-changing.

She suffered catastrophic injuries, including a fractured spine, busted spleen and a broken cheekbone.

Katelyn was placed into a week-long coma and her family knew there was every chance she could be paralysed following the ‘horrendous’ incident.

But she fought on bravely and, despite nine months on the sidelines, came back to ride again – even reaching the pinnacle of her sport in 2017 when she won a Group 1 race.

Recalling that nightmare fall, Katelyn said: “I can’t remember that whole week.

“I fell and I broke my back and my face. It’s just a bit of a blank to me.

Katelyn used her mum as inspiration in a male-dominated sport
She earned just £275 a week as an apprentice jockey

“There was definitely no looking back though, as soon as I woke from my coma I said to my mum, ‘when’s my next ride? What’s happening to all my horses?’

“There was never any concern about getting back in the saddle.

“All that time out really made me appreciate what I get to do for a job.”

How different that job could have been had Katelyn said yes to a lucrative modelling gig in the US.

She turned her back on a career on the catwalk in favour of being an apprentice jockey on £275 a week.

Any regrets – especially given the 4am alarm calls to get to the stables in time?

Katelyn, who now works as a TV presenter, told the Daily Mail: “I got a contract from America for a modelling career but I turned that down.

“It was either that or be a jockey and I always wanted to be a jockey.

“I definitely don’t regret my decision at all. I’m living the dream.

“I can’t remember not wanting ever to be a jockey.”

Katelyn is good mates with Kayla Nisbet – a fellow Australian who, along with Jamie Kah and others, has brought in a kind of Golden Age of female jockeys.

Record-breaking Hollie Doyle and the likes of Hayley Turner, Bryony Frost and Megan Nicholls fly the flag for Britain.

Still, it took some guts for Katelyn to want to break into the male-dominated riding industry.

For that bit of grit and determination she turned to mum Mary, herself a former jockey.

Speaking of her inspiration, Katelyn said: “Mum’s been a huge influence on my whole entire career and life.

“She’s an amazing woman.

“She’s the first person to call me every single day and goes through my races.

“She’s been a huge help in every way possible. She’s been in the racing industry her whole entire life and knows about the ups and downs, the broken bones, the falls, so every time I hit a bump in the road she was there to help me.”
