Election: Here’s why Giants won’t host a voting center like 49ers, Warriors, A’s

The 49ers announced Tuesday they’re joining fellow Bay Area sports franchises such as the Warriors, A’s and Sharks and will host a voting center for the general election on Nov. 3.

You may have noticed the Giants, the Bay Area’s oldest franchise, aren’t among the teams utilizing their home as a public polling place. It turns out there’s a very good reason for that.

A Giants spokesman said the team offered up Oracle Park as a hub for San Francisco voters to vote or drop off ballots, but city officials told them it wasn’t necessary.

“San Francisco had other resources, so we’re focusing our efforts on voter registration,” the spokesman texted Tuesday. Toward that end, the Giants launched a voter engagement campaign last week at www.mlb.com/giants/fans/vote.

Likewise, the San Jose Earthquakes were told thanks but no thanks when they offered up Avaya Stadium for Santa Clara county voters.

“(The county) said that they didn’t need us for this election but we could be used for future elections,” Quakes vice president of marketing and communications Jed Mettee said.

Santa Clara County voters will already have an expansive polling center option, thanks to Tuesday’s announcement of the 49ers’ commitment during a press conference with California Secretary of State Alex Padilla and representatives from the county’s registrar of voters and More Than A Vote.

The more than 30,000 square foot SAP Tower atrium within Levi’s Stadium will be open for early voting daily starting Oct. 31 (from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.) until Election Day, when it will be open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. Parking in the Great America lot will be free.

“We want to do all we can to empower the community and our employees to make their voices heard at the ballot box and we thank our partners on this initiative and the NFL for prioritizing this message nationwide,” 49ers CEO Jed York said in a statement.

Levi’s is the largest of the 100 voting centers and 98 drop box locations in Santa Clara County.

The 49ers’ announcement came one day after the A’s laid out their plans for the Coliseum to serve as a vote center.

Earlier this month, the Warriors unveiled detailed plans to host voters at Chase Center in San Francisco as well as their facilities in Oakland and Santa Cruz.

The Sharks’ contribution during the election process will be serving up SAP Center as a large-scale ballot drop-off location. The Sharks hoped to have SAP used as a polling station but Santa Clara County officials decided their arena’s parking lot would be best utilized for drive-up and contactless ballot delivery.
