Matt Nagy Reveals The Exact Moment He Was Done With Trubisky

Matt Nagy flirted with the idea last season. Everybody remembers the Los Angeles Rams game when it seemed like the Chicago Bears head coach benched Mitch Trubisky. After the game ended, he insisted the move was made because the QB was hurt. Yet even then people felt they knew. The head coach was tiring of the kid’s constant mistakes.

Fast forward to this season, Nagy gave Trubisky one last chance. Despite starting 2-0, the quarterback didn’t exactly string two good games together. It felt like more of the same. Making just enough plays and then leaning way too much on a good defense. Things finally came to a head down in Atlanta.

After an ugly first half, Nagy saw enough. Nick Foles was given the green light and the veteran promptly led a 16-point comeback to win 30-26. This after trailing 26-10. Was there a particular moment that finally broke Nagy’s faith in Mitch?

Yes, there was. He explained after the game.

The play in question took place early in the 3rd quarter. It was 3rd and 8 and the Bears need a conversion badly. Trubisky was looking for tight end Jimmy Graham but completely missed cornerback Blidi Wreh-Wilson lurking in the area. It was a bad read and a bad decision. The latest and perhaps last of many he’s had over the years.

Matt Nagy did everything he could to help Mitch

The truth is it didn’t have to be this way. Trubisky had plenty of opportunities to get back into that game. Most notably a deep ball to Anthony Miller that likely would’ve been a touchdown. Sadly, as has become his reputation, it was overthrown. Nagy gets a ton of heat for his play calling but anybody with eyes could tell that Trubisky just couldn’t run the system.

The Bears tried. They revamped the scheme to include more running the ball, more play action, and more bootlegs. They tried to cater to Trubisky’s strengths. In the end, wasn’t enough. He just doesn’t have the processing power to handle the speed and complexity of NFL defenses. So Nagy did what he had to do.
