The Middle Park looks a cracker on paper, with the ‘big four’ standing their ground at declarations stage on Thursday.

Minzaal, Method and Supremacy arrive with impressive last-time-out victories under their belts, but I think you can pick holes in their form.

LUCKY VEGA (3.00 Newmarket) looks the bet for me. He destroyed his rivals, including distant second The Lir Jet, in the Phoenix Stakes two starts ago.

He was well-fancied to follow up in a red-hot renewal of the National Stakes earlier this month, but it was a complete write-off as he was boxed in for much of the straight and flew home when it was all too late.

He has the best form and will have no issues whatsoever dropping back to 6f – he should be favourite in my book and is the one to beat.

The Cambridgeshire is up next, and there is plenty to like about the chances of the ‘sexy’ horse in the race, Tempus.

But there is a lot of depth in this race and there is value further down the betting if you want to have a crack at him.

LUCANDER (3.35 Newmarket) is a good each-way bet for my money. Bar a no-show in a muddling race at the July Course earlier in the summer, he has amassed an excellent record over the past two years.

And he arrives here with an authoritative win at York under his belt, when he picked up nicely from off the pace to comfortably beat several of these.

He is still unexposed with just eight career starts behind him and he looks to have been drawn on the right side of the track in 27, with the bulk of the pace berthed middle-to-high.

There is a bit of rain around and any softening of the ground will be a plus for the three-year-old, who stays further than this 1m1f trip.

Saturday selections and advised odds

3.00 Newmarket – Lucky Vega 1pt win @ 4-1

3.35 Newmarket – Lucander 1pt EW @ 18-1

4.40 Newmarket – Arigato 1pt win

  • (Started August 6) rolling P&L: +6pts

In the finale, ARIGATO (4.40 Newmarket) can enhance his fantastic course record.

The William Jarvis-trained five-year-old has form figures of 1011 over this C&D, with his only blip coming on bottomless ground in November 2018.

He ran a cracker off 1lb higher in the Bunbury Cup in July, but he has been well short of his best at Goodwood and York since then.

He is a different beast at the Rowley Mile, however, and the return to this track should see him in a much better light.

Besides, this is a much more realistic target than the York race, which was one of the hottest handicaps of the season.

He is still on a workable mark and he is versatile as regards going, so he won’t be inconvenienced if a bit of rain does arrive.
