How injury-cursed are the 49ers? Even their charter plane got bruised before they could fly to the East Coast for their first road trip of the season.

“The plane we were supposed to take out on Friday, somehow someone crashed into it on the runway, people working, I guess,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. “They dented it. We thought they were going to fix it. Then they thought it was not safe to travel, so I’m glad they made that decision.”

Instead of flying out of San Jose after Friday’s walk-through practice, the 49ers reversed course up the bay to San Francisco International Airport.

“They got us a new plane in San Francisco. We had to go to a different airport,” Shanahan added. “It gave us a six-hour delay so got us in real late. We landed about 2:30 a.m. and got to the hotel around 4 (a.m.). We were supposed to get in at 9 (p.m.).

“Luckily we came on Friday. It would have been a big issue if we came on Saturday.”

Bigger injuries came the next day, when multiple 49ers starters got hurt in their 31-13 win over the New York Jets.

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo left at halftime with a high-ankle sprain, and knee injuries took out defensive linemen Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas as well as running backs Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman. Bosa and Thomas are believed to have sustained season-ending ligament tears, while Mostert and Coleman are dealing with at least sprains.

Another example of the 49ers’ injury curse: a truck equipped with an MRI machine broke down Sunday night on the way to the 49ers’ encampment at The Greenbriar Resort in West Virginia, where they’re practicing this week before flying back to New Jersey for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.

The 49ers relied Monday on a local hospital to give wounded players MRI exams, and Shanahan was still awaiting results on Bosa, Thomas and Coleman by mid-afternoon.
