Dan James netted a debut goal and fellow new boys Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka started in a team with an average age of just 24.

And boss Solskjaer said: “We have found a way we want to play that we believe in.

“This is just the start — the more we get to play with each other and show we’re a team, the more we’ll improve.

“The boys have been excellent since July 1 and have been fit enough to implement what we wanted to do.

“The team spirit has been fantastic.

“But it’s still a work in progress, we know we’re not anywhere near the finished article and there is loads of improvement to be made.

“We have to play better than this to get results against loads of teams.”

Solskjaer felt his players looked nervous in the first half as they took a 1-0 lead into the break via a Rashford penalty.

But they turned it on in the second period, with Anthony Martial also scoring.

Coming into half-time we were a bit lucky, they pinned us back and created chances

Manchester United Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Solskjaer said: “Coming into half-time we were a bit lucky, they pinned us back and created chances but we settled a few nerves.

“The second half was outstanding, we defended well in shape and counter-attacked well.

“We’ve signed three fantastic boys, three fantastic personalities and are delighted with them.

“The price tags have not fazed them, they’ve got some cool heads on their shoulders.

“Dan has made a great impact and it is the best feeling ever scoring a goal in front of the Stretford End, you can’t beat that.

“Harry’s done exactly what we’ve signed him for, his presence in both boxes, his calmness and composure on the ball.

“He’s a leader and with him, David De Gea and Victor Lindelof they marshalled that back line really well.

“It is important to have strong personalities at the back.”

PRAISE FOR POGBA

Solskjaer also had words of praise for French midfield ace Paul Pogba, who wanted to leave this summer but has now knuckled down.

He said: “He’s a top, top lad, such a pro and loves playing football.

”When he gets on to that pitch, he grows.

“He’s a World Cup winner, he’s come so far in his career.

“There’s no point letting yourself down.”

Maguire revealed he demanded a clean sheet from team-mates in his first United game since becoming the world’s most expensive defender.

The £85million former Leicester man said: “I was saying when we scored the third and fourth that we wanted the clean sheet and needed to concentrate.

“We only kept two clean sheets here last season but we need to make this a fortress.

“It’s a good start but we are not getting carried away and we need to keep improving.

“I felt good. I’ve only had three or four days with the lads. I will get better and fitter.”

RASHFORD RARING TO GO

Maguire gave a positive analysis of his new team’s display as they blew away poor Chelsea at a bouncing Old Trafford.

He added: “We rode our luck in the first half and gave away some chances and were sloppy on the ball.

“But we got a lot better in the second half and controlled the game and deserved the three points.

“We moved it nicely — if you give it to the front three they are always so dangerous on the break.

“It was a convincing win and a good performance.”

Man-of-the-match Rash-ford added: “It’s all about playing to our strengths.

“For a while we have had players who are good on the counter-attack.

“It’s been our decisions that have let us down but for a lot of us we are young and need to work on it.

“We aren’t perfect but there are definitely opportunities.”
