Eddie Jackson Is Blown Away By How Good David Montgomery Is

0 5

Eddie Jackson has seen his fair share of good running backs. This goes back to his days in college. Todd Gurley, Alvin Kamara, Leonard Fournette, and Alex Collins were some of the guys he had to play against in the SEC. This isn’t even counting the likes of Derrick Henry, T.J. Yeldon, and Kenyan Drake whom he saw every day in practice at Alabama. So when the All-Pro safety has an opinion on a running back, it’s worth noting.

That is why it was fascinating to hear what he had to say regarding new Chicago Bears running back David Montgomery. It’s no secret the team has high hopes for the rookie. GM Ryan Pace traded up to get him in the 3rd round back in April. Pace usually doesn’t trade for a player unless he strongly believes he can be a difference-maker. Jackson should know. The Bears traded up for him back in 2017.

When speaking to Dan Graziano of ESPN about Montgomery, the star Bears safety was glowing in his review. He doesn’t just expect the running back to be good. He already sees greatness in him.

“He’s a dog,” safety Eddie Jackson said. “He’s got it early. A lot of guys don’t have it early, but he’s got it early. Takes coaching and installs it into the game. He’s the truth. He’s going to be something special.”

Eddie Jackson is already seeing what Montgomery can do

Jackson may be a teammate and somewhat bias, but his words breed intrigue nonetheless. The general agreement coming out of the draft is that Montgomery was the second-best running back in the entire class. The only reason he wasn’t the top guy is that he’s not fast. Or at least not fast enough to turn heads. He ran a pedestrian 4.6 at the scouting combine. Given the NFL’s over-obsession with speed, it was inevitable he’s fall.

Nevermind the fact that several top running backs in Bears history weren’t overly fast including Walter Payton.

Montgomery’s game is built around his versatility. Not only does he have exceptional cutting ability to make tacklers miss, but he also has soft hands for making plays in the passing game. What people overlook most though is his power. Montgomery is a strong young man. He rarely goes down on the first hit and has shown he can run through tackles as the video above proves.

While Jordan Howard was beloved during his time in Chicago, there is no question Montgomery can do more things than he ever could. Combine that with playing in a diverse and creative offense under Matt Nagy? There’s no telling how much havoc the rookie can create.
