49ers’ practice report: Even without Ford, defense dominates again

0 8

WEATHER: 73 degrees and sunny at the start of the 10:15 a.m. practice

LENGTH OF PRACTICE: 2 hours

SCHEDULE: The 49ers have the day off Monday. They will return to practice at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday

INJURIES: Pro Bowl pass-rusher Dee Ford will miss at least another week of practice after receiving an injection in his knee.

“It’s something that I think will end up helping him,” Shanahan said. “… We feel good about where Dee Ford’s at. And we wanted to make sure we took care of that so he can be fresh going into the year.”

In March, the 49ers traded a second-round pick to the Chiefs for Ford and signed him to a five-year, $87.5 million contract. In 2017, Ford played in just six games because he had back surgery to repair a herniated disc for the second time since 2011.

Shanahan was asked if Ford’s knee issue took the 49ers by surprise.

“You hear about wear and tear on guys,” Shanahan said. “You get every medical report that they’ve ever had from their trainers. And that’s been on the list.”

In other injury news, DT DeForest Buckner returned to practice after dealing with a mild toe strain. Cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon (glute) missed his second straight practice. RB Jeff Wilson (calf), G Joshua Garnett and FS Jimmie Ward also remained sidelined.
