Germanys Merz fails to be elected chancellor in first round of voting

Conservative leader Friedrich Merz failed to garner the parliamentary majority needed to become chancellor on Tuesday in a first round of votes. Germanys lower house now has 14 days to elect Merz or another candidate with an outright majority. Another vote will not take place on Tuesday,the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper reported.
