Germanys Merz fails first round of voting to be elected chancellor

Conservative leader Friedrich Merz failed to garner the parliamentary majority needed to become chancellor on Tuesday in a first round of votes. Germanys lower house now has 14 days to elect Merz or another candidate with an outright majority, and another vote could be attempted as early as Tuesday.
