Pyeongchang, South Korea (dpa) - Dutchman Kjeld Nuis won gold in the Olympic men‘s 1,500 metres speed skating on Tuesday to add to the world title he won on the same track last year.Nuis broke the track record with a time of 1 minute 44.01 seconds. Compatriot Patrick Roest was second, 0.85 seconds adrift, while South Korea‘s Kim Min Seok wowed the home crowd by grabbing a surprise bronze. Poland‘s Zbigniew Brodka, the Sochi 2014 champion, could only finish 12th at the Gangneung Oval. Dutch speed skaters have won all four events so far at Pyeongchang and all Olympic men‘s titles are currently held by speed skaters from the Netherlands, although the 10,000m, 500m, 1,000m, team pursuit and mass start are all still to take place at this 2018 edition.The last time a team held all the Olympic titles in men‘s speed skating was in 1980 when Eric Heiden of the United States won all five events on the programme.It was Nuis‘ first Olympic medal."That was wild. I skated very well but I was really nervous," the 28-year-old told Dutch TV station NOS."I wanted to show that I am the quickest. Today I have shown that I can cope with the pressure."He will go again in the 1,000m a week on Friday when more Dutch domination cannot be discounted."My wife and my little kid will come for the 1,000m, so that‘s going to be even better. I‘m a really happy man," Nuis said."You can feel my heartbeat, it‘s crazy."Roest, 22, may be a newcomer to the Olympic scene but he was not short of confidence and could be a big rival to Nuis in future. "I had hoped for more," the silver medallist said.South Korea‘s man-of-the-moment Kim could not quite believe his bronze medal, after fans in the arena had waved flags and screamed at the top of their voices to help power him round the track. "When I passed 700m, my legs were stiff and I was panting very hard. But the cheering from the spectators motivated me a lot," he said.
